Samuel Newell Reeves was the son (sixth of seven children) of Ichabod (1770-1840) Reeves and Martha Harvey Reeves (married about 1802). Ichabod died in Morgan County, Alabama. Online genealogies trace Ichabod's Reeves family back for several centuries in England. Samuel married Melvina Hodges (born about 1830 in Alabama) Reeves on May 25, 1843. Samuel Reeves and Melvina settled in Morgan County, Alabama because they had received a government land grant there. Samuel is listed on a prewar list of slave owners as owning 7 or 9. Apparently, Samuel and Melvina had 10 children; most of them ended up in Texas after the civil war. Simeon was Samuel and Melvina's oldest child and the only Confederate soldier among the Reeves boys. (information from John Reeves) |
