History George Holtzman Jr., son of George (Sr.) and Madeleine Schneider Holtzman, husband of Madelaine Sturm Holtzman and father of Henry Holtzman (my 2 Great Grandfather) was 40 years old when Henry was born. George died March 9, 1843 in Niederseebach, Wissembourge, Bas-Rhin, France. He would have been about 65 years of age. It was said he was a bricklayer. In another place (time of Henry's birth) it said he was a miller. George was born about 1778 (baptismal records may indicate 1784). He also became may of Niederseebach. George Holtzman Jr.'s son Henry (my 2 Great Grandfather) emigrated to America, leaving from the port Havre in France, and arriving at Castle Garden in New York, aboard the ship Normandie on April 16, 1834. His record lists his occupation as a farmer and notes that he paid his own fare. You can see his record as a 17 year old immigrant. His mother, Madelaine Sturm Holtzman, also immigrated later. You can see her record as a 50 year old immigrant, arriving with daughters Madelain Holtzmann Heintz and Dorothea Holtzmann Pfanner and their families (Judah Touro manifest) on July 7, 1847 in New York. She is buried at Berlett's Corner Lutheran Cemetery, Wilmot Township, Ontario. She was 73 years, 5 months, and 19 days. Madelaine Sturm Holtzman's daughter, Elisabeth Holtzman Hauck, arrived with her family aboard the Hector on December 2, 1847, in New York. Elisabeth died in December, enroute to Buffalo aboard a boat (likely on the Erie Canal) and was buried in Buffalo. GEORGE'S PARENTS: George's (junior, son) death record stated that George (senior, father) and his wife Madeleine Schneider died in Niederseebach. (Researched by Anthony T. Earl. LDS.) Full Holtzman Genealogy Report (Note: Our great, great grandfather Henry's younger brother George also immigrated to Ontario. George and his children appear regularly and sometimes prominently in Bruce County history. Henry's sister Madeline married Thiebaut Heintz on December 2, 1829. Henry's sister Marguerite married Jean-Adam Kuntz on April 29, 1837. Phyllis Holtzman Hebert is in contact with some of George and Madelaine's descendants in France.) |
