Baptism of George Holtzmann
Prior to the French Revolution (1789 to 1799) records of birth were recorded and kept in the commune churches. The revolution brought about radical changes. Births, as well as marriages and deaths were now considered civil acts and no longer recorded in the church. The church was separated from the "state". George Holzmann's baptism in 1784 can be found in the protestant church records of 1767-1787. His year of birth therefore is most likely 1784. (from David Heintz)
