Joshua Dean's Land Office Military Warrant #1380

Joshua died about 1810, Wayne County Kentucky. His is buried at Dean's Ridge, Wayne County, Kentucky. On February 24, 2011, a ceremony was held to honor Joshua Dean, Revolutionary War soldier, and his son James Dean/Dane, soldier in the War of 1812. The ceremony was sponsored by the Wayne County Museum and two grave markers were placed near their burial location on the old family plot.

Joshua Dean is a Revolutionary War veteran and ancestor to most all the members on this family site who are connected to Susanna Loveall, a daughter to the well known Rev. Henry Loveall. (Other information on Henry Loveall). Joshua and Susanna were married 15 Oct 1766 in Baltimore. Joshua was a son of John Deane and Susanna West. He was born 28 Feb 1745 in either Maryland or Virginia.

Joshua Dean, along with his brother David, joined the Revolutionary Army. Joshua is listed as rank of "Soldier in the Virginia Continental Line Unit."

He did service at Valley Forge. His Personal ID#: VA31674. The Muster Roll lists the following: Rank: Private; Rank Type: Rank & File; Brigade: Woodford's Brigade; Company: Capt. William Mosley; State: VA; Regiment: 7VA; Division: Lafayette's Division. He was at Valley Forge from Dec 1777 until June 1778, the historic severe winter, 1777-1778, with Gen. George Washington.

You can view a copy of the Muster Roll, search for Joshua Dean, and view his entry. Joshua would have been 32 years of age and was married to Susanna at that time.

Six (6) years later on July 16, 1783, Joshua received a Land-Office Military Warrant #1380.0 for 100 acres for his service in the army. The Warrant states "for his service for three years." You can view a copy of Joshua Dean's warrant in the Kentucky archives for Land Office Military Warrants.

Joshua and Susanna moved to Harrisonburg, VA by 1782, and he appeared on the tax rolls there from 1782-1787. They were in North Carolina about 1800 and moved to Wayne County, KY by 1810.

I came across one report that states Joshua was married a 2nd time to a Tabitha. Tabitha was supposedly born about 1770 in SC and died about 1795 in Edgewater, SC. I have not found any documentation or further information on this supposed marriage. If this is correct and if the dates are correct, Joshua would have been about 35 years older than Tabitha, and she would have died at about age 25. I do not believe this marriage to be factual.
