![]() Land Title Deed of John Dean, 200 acres, White County, Tennessee, August 26, 1807 |
John Deen's father, Joshua Deen, was born February 28, 1745, in Virginia. Joshua married Susana Loveall on October 15, 1766. She, the daughter of Rev. Henry Loveall, was born on February 28, 1745, in Virginia. Joshua and Susana were the parents of two sets of twins, Jacob and Molly, and Temperance and John. John was born in 1778 or 1779 in Virginia. He married Ruth Nash (possibly Mash). Ruth's father is recorded in Franklin County, Tennessee records as John Mash. John and Ruth Dean arrived in Tennessee around 1808. He is first recorded in Deed Book "A" Page 59 of the White County, Tennessee deed records. He received Land Grant #132 on April 20, 1808, for 200 acres, from Tennessee. John is next recorded in the deed records of Franklin County, Tennessee. John is recorded in Deed Book "A" Page 25 as selling 106 3/4 acres to Strother and Anderson on February 17, 1809. John became quite active in the deed records of Franklin County where he is recorded as the purchaser and seller of several tracts of real estate. John and Ruth Dean were the parents of eleven known children: William (1801), Jim, Caloway, Alfred (April 25, 1808), Perry, Asberry (July 1, 1823), Wiley, Russell, Mary, Nancy, and Frank. Alfred married Nancy Forsythe and they became the parents of John Wesley Dean. John Dean could neither read nor write. In the early Franklin County deed records, he is recorded several times by simply making his mark as an "X" on the deeds he executed. His descendents are variously spelled Deen, Dean, Deens, Deans, Deene, and Deane. Forest Edgar Deen, a descendent of John Dean, became the mayor of Fort Worth, Texas. His wife, Edith Alderman Deen, was a well known writer of religious books. According to deed records, Caloway Deen was the first of the Deen family to arrive in Van Zandt County, Texas. Caloway was involved in the siege of Bexar. He is recorded as the purchaser of several tracts of real estate in 1854. Caloway represented San Augustine County in the Texas secession convention. John Deen apparently followed his son, Caloway, to Texas, as he is reported to be buried in Jimtown, Smith County, Texas, where he died in 1855. |
