Dean-Hey Heritage

"Maybe it's a desire to tell these grandchildren of a way, the likes of which, they will never know. Is there a countryside to be found where there is no smell of exhaust, or noise of cars, no beer cans or rubbish along the roadside?

Is there any place where there is just the sweet smell of clover on a warm spring day? Where the days slip by in unhurried rhythm and the passing of a neighbor is an event?

Would a tiny creek, tumbling over its rocks and stones, rushing on its way, hold any fascination for them?

Maybe it is to leave them a knowledge of their own heritage, for there was a time in these United States when even a whole day of life could not be taken for granted. Now we take for granted so much, forgetting what these things have cost others. (from "Studying Writing," by Ruth Holtzman Hey)
