Our Home
South Walnut, July, 1979

We'd saved enough money to buy a small home on the South Side and not have a payment. Our realtor kept discouraging us from the small homes we looked at. One day he called, "I've got just the home. Larger, newer. And the difference between the money you've saved and its price is the balance still owed on the home's mortgage, a VA loan at 4%, and you can take it over." Incredible. Interest rates in 1979 were a record 12-18%. Our payments would be $93 monthy for 13 years. (Of course, we paid it off quite early.) And that is how we came to make our home on South Walnut Street.
