Grandpa Holtzman with Ruth
driving Prince and Daisy
Sherrard, Illinois

"Wednesday, December 29, 1897: I visited Brother Apples this afternoon. Drove 14 miles. Roads very slushy. Traveled 1,891 miles [this year] on the Forreston Circuit." (from J.L.'s diary, 1897)

"You remember Prince and Daisy and when we sold them to different parties how they whinnied one to another. We could hear them and we couldn't eat any dinner. Pets meant so much to us three. They had given us ever so much pleasure. We enjoyed so many fine drives." (February 20, 1935, in a letter from Zwaantje to Ruth)
