This news item from the Lee County Times—Friday, July 19, 1895—appears in a section headed "Willow Creek," a township just south of Steward, Lee County. Grandma Ruth Holtzman Hey, J.L's daughter, said that her father often preached in 3 languages on a Sunday: English, French, and German. As a young girl, Ruth spoke all 3 languages, but the family quit speaking them in the home because they did not want daughter Ruth to have an accent.

From Lee County Times, Friday, January 10, 1896.

This area was home to Ellen Boken, Ezra's wife. Ellen and Ezra were married Feburary 6, 1895. Ellen and Ezra are buried in Union Cemetery, just north and east of Willow Creek. Was it his father's ministry which occasioned the meeting of Ezra and Ellen? One can only speculate.

Holtzman Store, 1208 E. Fourth, in Sterling, Illinois, 1912-1916.

"Holtzman's Store" listed in Sterling Directory at 1208 E. 4th from 1915-1918. No 1919 Directory. 1920 Directory lists Earl Holtzman (Grandpa's son) as the grocer, 1208 E. 4th. Same listing in 1922 Sterling Directory.

According to a Sterling Gazette article, there was a fire in the Holtzman store, June 20, 1922. Evidently, Ezra was running the store and lived above it. The fire awakened the family about 12:30 am, and they were able to escape.

I never met Ezra. Ezra and Ellen had a daughter named Alice who Mother (Ruth Holtzman Hey) told me suffered from diabetes and died at age 20. (recollections by Janna Ruth Hey Dean)
