Mocha Moment:
Construction
September - December, 2002

For a lengthier history, read the The Mocha Moment Story. On this page, we'll sketch just enough to make sense of the photos. Kathy and I first saw 1121 Center Avenue on June 9, 2002. We closed on the property, and by September, demolition of the house began.

Trenching the Laterals

Our children were indispensable. Imagine Jordan (9) and Seth (11) nailing the subfloor. Jared (senior year) helped after school and Saturdays. Caleb was roofing his way through college and shingled Mocha Moment faster than all of us together could have.

Two retired friends, Gordy and Dennis, worked all 13 weeks. About 8 other friends said they'd give me a week. Ben was our builder. Too many Indians and not enough chiefs. Our nephew Jon, a framer from Florida, agreed to come for a week. Now we had 2 chiefs. We started framing on Saturday morning, October 12. By Friday night, October 18, the building was closed in with the roof on. Not bad for two professionals and some handy friends and family. Though it was early October, Forida Jon needed a fire. So framing began on October 12, and we opened on Monday, January 13. Not bad, not bad at all.

Gordy worked every day for 13 weeks. When asked, Gordy explained, "We all help each other and pass it on."

Caleb Roofing
Having roofed through college, Caleb said, "Bring me shingles and get out of my way."
