Dad, Jerry on the Allis-Chalmers

Farming in South Dakota
Where we lived from 1950-1953

I remember this tractor on Dad & Grandpa's farm 10 miles East of Huron, S.D. When we spread manure, Dad would put the tractor in gear, leave me to steer the tractor while he jumped on the manure spreader seat. I thought I was big stuff, but Dad had nothing to worry about. Fences were few and far between.

I also remember being with Dad and several other farmers, riding on a tractor pulled hay wagon and going down the gravel road to some establishment for, I suppose, some liquid refreshment. It must have been a thrashing crew.

Dad enjoyed telling the story of his neighbor's humilation. The neighbor would often brag about his H Farmall and how it could outpull any and all tractors. Dad accepted his challenge. They put the rearends of the Farmall and the Allis back-to-back, attached a heavy chain and the contest began. With a cocky smile, Dad would say, "My Allis pulled him and his Farmall all over the barnyard and I never heard any more bragging!"

Notice the off-sided seat with the wooden backbrace. This gave the farmer a better view of the furrow when plowing. Should be a smoke stack (upright muffler)...must have broken off.

This joint farming venture lasted about seven years before the dry weather finally beat them. (recollections by Jerry)
