Richard Hulan & Lizzie Reeves Dean
Rose Hill Cemetery, Merkel, Texas

After his death at age 75, Richard's son summoned the Barrow Sheppard Funeral Home in Merkel, Texas (Baird is 40 miles east of Merkel) and requested they prepare his father's body for burial. On Thursday, October 19, 1944 at 3:00 p.m., his funeral was conducted from the mortuary chapel. According to his obituary, Richard's funeral was conducted by a retired Baptist minister, Reverend J. W. Saffle and was assisted by reverend E. W. Weathers.

After the funeral, Richard's body was transported to the Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel, Texas and there buried in the Dean family plot. Richard was interred next to his first wife of 17 years, Elizabeth Ellen "Lizzie" Reeves Dean. Apparently Richard was a member of the Woodsmen of The World: the tombstones over his and Lizzie's graves are the Woodsmen of the World Memorial Tombstones. Richard's tombstone stands in excess of five feet and "Lizzie's" in excess of four feet, and both are inscribed with their dates of birth and death.
