Vegter-Tschetter Heritage

Katie & Jacob Tschetter (In front of 830 Lawnridge with the north house behind them.) Grandpa bought Jerry the jeep to make money plowing snow. The Hank Vegter family lived in the north house when Kathy was in 5th grade and Hank was recuperating from his construction accident (falling into a pit while pouring foundations for giant power lines.)

(recollections by Jacob Tschetter, continued)

It was on the 21st day of February, 1943 when 12 members of our conference met in Rev. Jacob M. Tschetter's house to organize the Bethesda Church of Huron. We had meetings in a private homes, but the 1st of July we had our first Sunday morning devotion in a church building we bought. Our church membership grew, and so did our Sunday school. So in January, 1954, we enlarged our church and at present we have 10 classes with 140 members. Now March 1, 1966, we are crowded out again, and we intend to build a new church.

"This was Blair & Rachel's last trip to SD. We spent two full days with Grandma Tschetter and Aunt Viola. Tuesday we went for a ride in the country to visit Aunt Anna (Grandma's sister-in-law) and Grandpa's grave. Wednesday we all ate at Phoebe's Restaurant. We wanted to spend all of our time with Grandma. I hope we made her happy as she seems so sad at the nursing home. Aunt Anna's home was Grandma's parents' homestead. I tried to imagine Grandma as a little girl running through those hallways." (recollection by Granddaughter Karen Vegter Dekker)

I remember going out to Aunt Anna's from time to time for dinner. We always had "greasy" duck for dinner. Nothing tasted as good as it did at Grandma Tschetter's. She was not near as good of a cook as her sister, our Grandma Tschetter. (Kathy Vegter Dean)
