Ontje Huizinga engraved on the monument
Claus and Janna Von Mark Huisenga, had another son, Ontje, older brother to Gertje. Ontje, born December 12, 1840, an immigrant, only 21 years old, died in Tennessee in 1862 in the Civil War. (I wonder if he even spoke English.) Ontje is engraved (different spelling) on the Freeport Civil War Monument.
Ontje stood 5'7", grey eyes, light complexion. Ontje was a private, Company C, 46th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers. He enlisted September 10, 1861, and died of disease on May 5, 1862, at age 21, in Shiloh, Tennessee.
