John Phillip Hey had divorced his first wife, Elizabeth. He remarried and moved to California. The news of his second wife's death was recorded in the Sterling Gazette in 1929.
Gene Harshman (Aunt Vera's son) said that when John Phillip brought papers to Elizabeth to sign, she didn't know what she was signing: he had sold the farm. Jan Hey Dean (another granddaughter) corroborated this story.
