Obituary for John Phillip Hey
(Nicer Copy of Obituary)

"When about 16, I secured a place to room and board for high school. My father said, "No! I do not want you to learn mischief in high school." Later he sent me and Clement to business college. I took extra grammar, spelling, penmanship, typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping. After I was through, Father took me in to Chicago to meet a firm for whom I worked for over a year. Was so anxious to be home, would come often."

"I always was going to meet Pa when he would come in from the field and help unhitch and take horses to water. Also, I would meet him coming from town. He usually had some gum drops for us. Would often go to Penrose, Detweiler's Store to get molasses, gum, and candy.

"When I came back to Sterling Grandfather Hey (Jacob) lived with us. When he died, Father moved to 6th Avenue when he quit road carts and went to carpentering. He and a Mr. Hoak built some of the wire mill's early buildings. He built a house on 2nd Avenue for Uncle Jonas Baer. Also built one at 401 6th Avenue for himself. Later we bought a lot from Mrs. Wilson--911 6th Avenue--and built a house where we children all lived with Mother." (from "Our Family," by Mary Hey Harshman)
