CASTLE GARDEN
Before Ellis Island, Castle Garden (now Castle Clinton) served as America's immigration station for 8 million immigrants from 1855-1890. Although the original records were lost in a great fire, you can still view Joshua's record as a 13 year old immigrant. Joshua departed Bremen and Southampton on the ship Mosel, arriving at Castle Garden on July 21, 1879. You can also view Barbara's record as an 8 year old immigrant, arriving at Castle Garden on the ship Main.

MOTHER WIDOWED AND REMARRIED: Joshua's father died in Russia. His mother remarried to Johann Wipf. Joshua arrived in New York aboard the Mosel with his stepfather and mother, Johann and Catherine Wipf. Johann was 44 and Catherine was 50 at the time of their arrival in New York. Other children arriving on the Mosel: Johann (age 17), Sara (15) Jacob (9), and Maria (4).
