Samaritan Hospital Fire
by Dr. Will Hohm

Several of John and Susanna's children rose to prominence. Three became doctors: John, Paul, Joe. John established a hospital at 720 Dakota, Huron. Eventually, it became the Samaritan Hospital. Paul, along with nephews Theodore Hohm and Paul Hohm (sons of Susanna, daughter of John and Susanna), built the Tschetter-Hohm Clinic at 455 Kansas, Huron in 1949. Joe became a doctor in Whitehall, Wisconsin. In 1962, John built the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in memory of his wife.
(The home closed May 10, 2019 due to lack of funding.)

John became mayor of Huron (from Huron Revisited) for a total of 11 years. Violet, John's wife, christened the battle ship South Dakota. Because the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home cared for Senator Hubert Humphrey's mother, the senator wrote John a personal thank you.

Violet, John's wife, was a painter. Several of her works adorn the walls of the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. The bottom 6 photos on this page are taken from those same walls.
