Abandoned Cemetery

From a "Roots Web" entry

John Deen died in 1855 and is buried in Jimtown Cemtery in Jimtown, Texas. Jimtown is now a ghost town, and the cemetery has been abandoned. I located a listing of the grave sites of this cemetery at the Smith County Historical Society and John Dean/Deen's name was not on the list. This list and "inventory" was taken in 1986. The list did say, however, that there are several unmarked sites there; perhaps one of them is John's.

I have no documentation, but my best speculation is that John changed the spelling from Dean to Deen when he moved to Tennessee in about 1808. His son Asberry Mack, my great-great grandfather obviously used both spellings. I also found at the Smith County Historical Society a listing of the members of the Jimtown Masonic Lodge. On this list was the name Asberry Mack, listed as a charter member, with the spelling Dean. His gravestone at the Old Bethel Cemetery has the spelling Deen. His gravestone at the Old Bethel Cemetery has the spelling Deen. John's 4th son, Albert [Alfred?] and his descendants are under the spelling Dean. So perhaps Albert changed his name spelling back to Dean, or perhaps it was some of his siblings that changed the spelling to Deen.

Following Mary Ruth's death, John married again to Marilla Farmer. Marilla Farmer brought 3 childeren into this marriage: Burdine, Isaac, and Alexander Farmer. John and Marilla had 1 child, Franklin "Frank" Deen, and this son used the spelling Deen.
