Gert, Mart (1894)

I have a few more recollections of Aunt Gert. She always signed her letters with "mitt luff"—I suppose that was her German for "with love." In 1940 we left Grandma off at Aunt Gert's home in Ackley, Iowa, as we were going to Yellowstone Park on vacation. Susie always called her "Aunt Grandma." In 1946, (I think) I went with Mother to Uncle Otto's funeral. I just remember there were many people there and Aunt Gert had a big dining table that we sat at. Some time later her daughter Grace brought Aunt Gert to visit Grandma and I remember her saying something like I'll see you again sometime "should the Lord preserve us." I clearly remember that last phrase. Unfortunately, I don't remember the date of the visit. (recollections by Janna Hey Dean)

Bill Palmer, Aunt Mart's son, writes: "My father deserted mother and me in 1925. My parents were divorced in 1926 (A "no no" in the 20's) so we were semi-shunned until 1929-1930 when my Uncle Henry, his wife Margaret, and two of the Grobe cousins, Grace and Florence, made a surprise visit to Sabula, Iowa."

Grandma Zwaantje, Aunt Gert, Aunt Mart (1906)

Aunt Mart to Grandma Zwaantje (1920)
(Bill Palmer, Aunt Mart's son, writes about letter: "It is dated "Friday" because in the 20's US mail was delivered two days after mailing. Why it was never mailed I don't know, but I can date it fairly well by the event it describes. In the letter (to my Aunt Zwaantje) I was recovering from having my tonsils and adenoids removed. That dates it to 1920-1921.")
