Great Grandfather John and his brothers and sisters were all born in Russia. All died in South Dakota, most in Bridgewater, one in Yale, and Great Grandfather John in Huron. Note that both children "David" and "John" are highlighted as direct ancestors. Explanation. Grandma Katie Tschetter was a granddaughter of David; Grandpa Jacob Tschetter was a son of "John." That makes Grandpa and Grandma Jacob & Katie Tschetter first cousins, once removed, a phenomenon common among the Mennonites. Delegate Paul Tschetter is buried in New Hutterthal Mennonite Cemetery, the same cemetery as Great Grandmother Anna Hofer Mendel is buried. CASTLE GARDEN Before Ellis Island, Castle Garden (now Castle Clinton) served as America's immigration station for 8 million immigrants from 1855-1890. Although the original records were lost in a great fire, you can still view Jacob's record as a 59 year old immigrant. John and Barbara departed Bremen and Southampton on the ship Main, arriving at Castle Garden on September 4, 1875. You can view Barbara's record as a 56 year old immigrant. |
