Charles Dahl, Stepson and Son? As already recorded, Jacob's first wife Christina died in 1851 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Jacob returned to Poughkeepsie, New York where he married Clementina Dahl in 1855. Clementina, also born in Baden in 1821, had a son named Charles. Living in Jacob Hey's household, Charles "Doyle" appears in the 1860 census as 15 years old (born in Baden). Charles "Hey" again appears in Jacob Hey's household in the 1870 census as 25 years old (born in Baden). Charles Dal also appears in Jacob's "Last Will and Testament." "I give, devise, and bequeath to my stepson Charles Dal the following described property.." The 1860 Census lists Charles as "Charles Doyle" and the 1870 Census lists him as "Charles Hey." Jacob's will states "my stepson Charles Dal." Further research might determine if Charles was formally adopted by Jacob or if the appelation was simply practical. Note that living with Jacob in 1860 were Jacob's children Jacob (age 15) and Elizabeth (age 13) by his first wife, Charles Dal (age 15, Clementina's son), as well as Jacob and Clementina's children together, John (age 5) and Caroline (age 3). Jacob and Charles are listed as "farm laborers." By the 1870 Census, Jacob Jr. and Elizabeth have left the household, Charles and John both "work on farm," and Emma (age 10) and Abram (age 6) have joined the household. |

Jon DalIn both 1860 and 1870 censuses, Clementina's son Charles lived with Jacob and Clementina. This photo is labeled "Jon Dal." Was this Charles who sometimes went by Jon? Or, is this Clementina's brother Jon? We don't know.
