In 1916 Richard returned to Benton County, Arkansas and resided near Siloam Springs Township. He obtained employment as a Miller working in a feed mill. During this era, he also purchased and resold watermelons and apples. In early 1917 Richard returned to Merkel, Texas, purchased a fruit stand, and remained all summer selling fruits and vegetables. During the spring and summer of 1918, Richard often rode the train from Siloam Springs to Merkel, Texas taking with him railroad cars loaded with watermelons and apples. Some family members remember Richard telling them he considered the expense of obtaining a railroad boxcar to be well justified because the prices of melons and apples in Texas far exceeded the prices in Arkansas. He was also known to have a Coffee Shop where he sold whole green coffee and roasted it in Siloam Springs.
