Kathy on Silver Lady

I'd never been on a horse in my life. The only time I got on that horse, it took off behind the barn and out into the field towards the woods. I was worried. I couldn't get Silver Lady to do anything: slow down, turn around. What was I going to do when I got in the woods? But she must have decided to turn around on her own. It wasn't because I turned her. She went back toward the barn. When she ran into the yard, Dad grabbed the reins and stopped her. Otherwise, I'd have been on the ground. I never rode that horse again. (recollection by Kathy)
Lydia, a friend from school, got up on the horse. It had just rained. Puddles all over. There was a bush there, which Silver Lady decided to jump. She fell off and landed "all fours" right into the mud puddle. Dad roared and repeated that story countless times. (recollection by Kathy)

John on Silver Lady
I was with Dad when he bought this horse. After paying, he told me to ride her home. It was about 7 or 8 miles. Dad did not concern himself with the fact that this was a very spirited horse, there was no saddle, and I was not familiar with the horse and its habits and peculiarities.
This horse had a split personality; if a child was on its back, a more gentle horse could not be found. If an adult climbed on, the horse would immediately take on a different personality; prancing, side-stepping, and a little crow-hopping when you put her to a gallop. One visitor, a college gal, claimed that she could handle the horse and wanted to take her for a ride. We did not have a saddle. She appeared to be in control but later, the horse came back riderless. I know Dad got a kick out of these misadventures. He enjoyed relating the story of a son-in-law whose ride was cut short by a low hanging branch, Jon & I knew his tricks and we were able to stay on the topside. When Dad bought this horse, I had the privilege of riding him on the ten mile trip home. (I'm unaware of any adventures that Diane, Linda or Kathy may have had with this mount. Recollection by Jerry)
