Grandpa Hey spending time
with the dog and Steve

Grandpa Hey with Tommy Brasket, a boy they took in to help. Years later, when Tommy was in the service, he looked up Aunt Sue in Montana.

Grandpa & Uncle Clement
I recall being at Grandpa's, and occasionally, in the evening, he would leave to play cards at the Odd Fellows.

After the war, grandpa, like many other Americans sent care packages to needy relatives in Europe, devastated by the war. Emilie Hey wrote this this thank-you letter to "Cousin Abram Hey." The return address reads
Winden, Rheinpfalz (2b), Hauptstrasse 50 (Deutschland)

Phil Hey recalled this from Grandpa Abram Hey. Can you translate it?
FUNEX?
SVFX.
FUNEM?
SVFM.
OK, MNX.

This might not be easy in writing. You have to give it a "foreign accent."
Have you any eggs?
Yes, we have eggs.
Have you any ham?
Yes, we have ham.
OK, ham and eggs.

And this one:
ABCD GOLDFISH?
LMNO GOLDFISH.

And grandpa would laugh. It was funny because it was grandpa. I remember grandpa's Bible riddles:
Who was the shortest man in the Bible?
No not Zacchaus, it was "Ne-hi-miah."
But there was one even shorter.
Bildad the "Shu-hite."

And his chilren and grandchilren recollect Grandpa Hey repeating these lines often:
It was midnight on the ocean
Not a street car was in sight
The sun was shining brightly
For it rained all day that night
Twas summer in the winter
And the rain was snowing fast
While a barefoot boy with shoes on
Stood sitting in the grass
