Linda, Jerry, Dianna Riding the South Dakota Plains

Farming in South Dakota
Where we lived from 1950-1953

It was on this farm that the families of Uncle Pete and Uncle Harry visited us; where we (Larry & I) put live chickens through the meat grinder, went swimming in the cow tank, and had a picnic where Larry threw my shoe into the lake. Somewhere, there is a picture of Uncle Harry trying to "fish" it out of the water with a long stick. (Jerry)

Dad would tell how cold the farm house was. He was drinking coffee on the heater, spilled coffee, and it promptly froze to the floor.

We climbed the windmill, rode a pig to death, and put live (yes, live) chickens through the corn grinder, but we never could find the "chicken burgers" after we put them through the grinder. I think cousin Larry was quite the instigator.

Once Dad's pants got caught in farm machinery which tore his pants right off of him. I liked riding the tractor with Dad because I loved seeing the white gulls which followed the furrows. The final year when we lost the farm, Dad had planted the crops and they were all coming up. We had a hailstorm which destroyed everything. Mom and Dad made ice cream with the hail. That was just like my parents: they never looked back, made the most of everything. (recollections by daughter Dianna)
