Uncle Floyd was a seed dealer. Based in Dallas, he came to Merkel once a year and stayed with Dad's (Sr.) family instead of getting a motel. Burtis' car was always packed with seeds. One year he gave Dad (Jr., about 10 years old) a package of black diamond watermelon seeds. Later, dad had to defend his watermelon patch from some neighborhood "thieves" chasing them off with a shotgun.

In 1942, most of our family members gathered at Weatherford, Texas for a family reunion. Gary was 3 1/2 years of age, but he really liked Uncle Floyd. Floyd loved to tease, and he kept unbuttoning Gary's straps to his summer sun suit that buttoned in the back at the waste. Uncle Floyd unbuttoned Gary's pants, but Gary didn't know it. As he ran on to play, his pants dropped down. Was he shocked, and we all laughed. It happened over and over again during the day. Made Uncle Floyd's day. He had no children."
