Dean-Hey Heritage

Elbert Jr., Rena, Mom & Dad
Dad recollects he was probably
playing the harmonica.

The last licking I got from Dad. He promised that if I teased Rena Mae once more, and that if she tattled we'd both get it. When she came into the barn, I was milking. I turned the teat her direction and sprayed her. She tattled. Dad kept his word. (recollection by Elbert, Jr.)

An old circuit rider preacher, O. B. Tatum, who preached at the Salt Branch Baptist Church where we attended, worked for Granddaddy Dean. He would never accept charity; Granddaddy felt sorry for him and hired him during busy seasons. O. B. couldn't see and couldn't hear very well, and plowed up some corn. But Granddaddy was kind, and hired him anyway.

Uncle Dunie always teased me by cutting out the center of a slice of bread and handing me the ring of crust. Uncle Dunie would also meet his sisters' suitors at the gate and exact a quarter for the privilege to see his sisters.

Granddaddy Dean made stools for the girls. I still have mine. As I recollect, he made tables for the girls upon their marriages. Grandma Dean whittled a doll bed for Rena Mae. Gale still has it. (recollections by Carolyn Rister Mullinax)
