"I cannot ever remember not being in church. My earliest recollection was going in a horse-drawn buggy. We attended a small country church with wooden slatted benches and gasoline lanterns for lights. My dad was song leader and we kids were watched and poked if we dozed. Our friends were all church families. We loved and cared for one another going anywhere sickness was, and the adults would sit up all night if needed. We memorized Scripture, and a happy time was when we had a paper with a picture of Bible characters. We were elated when and if we had a penny for collection time, but I don't recall regular Bible reading time in the home and prayer time was not stressed to us at a very young age. When any one in the community was in trouble, the men would meet at different homes and have prayer meeting over that one." (recalled of her childhood by Maureen) As she was the oldest and last living member of the Elbert Dean, Sr. family, I asked her to write down all her memories of her family. I have excerpted these memories throughout this family site. Click on this link for Aunt Maureen's 5 page memoir. To my knowledge, she is the only member of this family that wrote out any genenral memories of the Elbert Dean, Sr. family. |
