Elbert Dean, Sr., 1910

"My first memories as a child. I remember dad's letting me ride a horse with him, we never had a saddle... They wouldn't work for us anyway because I rode behind dad, holding on to his bib-overalls from behind...for dear life. I remember one day he had gone to town in a wagon, flat bed, but as he drove into the yard I ran to get on the wagon. I fell and dad ran over me with a back wheel, breaking my collarbone, but otherwise, nothing serious."
"We moved every few years it seemed to another place. We never owned a farm but rented from others. Dad worked very hard to make rent to pay the landowner each fall after crops were gathered. There was never money to travel to see other family members so all we knew about them was what dad told us." (memories by Maureen Dean Jaynes)
