(from the obituary of Zwaantje Johnson Holtzman) "Though circumstances forced her to quit school in the third grade, she continued her education through her younger brothers and sisters. She was taught early to knit a stocking and piece a quilt. She pieced her first quilt before she was twelve and her last one for her great grandson, Michael, when she was 90. She learned tailoring and studied designing and during the busy seasons had as many as 24 girls working in her dressmaking shop."
