Vegter-Tschetter Heritage

Salem Mennonite Brethren Church Cemetery
Salem KMB Church
43173 272nd Street, Freeman, South Dakota.

Rudy & Norman (a walking encyclopedia of Mennonite history) took a whole afternoon to show us Kathy's ancestors' graves, churches, and homesteads. This cemetery is immediately across the road (north) from Salem KMB Church, founded by Kathy's great grandfather John Tschetter. David & Maria Tschetter's tombstone is visible at the right (east), back row in the photo.

David and Maria Tschetter homesteaded nearby and were members of Salem KMB Church.

David & Maria's Graves

Clarification: Mennonites (like Amish) are rather intermarried. David and Maria Tschetter (grandparents of Kathy's Grandma Katie Tschetter) are Kathy's great, great grandparents. John (who founded Salem KMB Church) and Susanna Tschetter (parents of Kathy's Grandpa Jacob Tschetter) are Kathy's great grandparents. David and John were brothers. That makes Kathy's Grandpa and Grandma Jacob and Katie Tschetter first cousins, once removed.
