Sewing at one of his two Pfaff machines. Dad was proud that he bought his machines for $300 each, maintained them perfectly, and sold them for $450 each.

God gave Dad wonderful skills, a desire to work hard, and creativity. He often made little tools that helped him to work more quickly and still turn out an excellent product, whether it was seat covers, truck tarps, boat cushions or covers. He seemed to have an endless variety of jobs to do.

Dad never opened his shop on Sunday—that was the Lord's Day, and he even refused to give an estimate if someone stopped at the house on Sunday. After he had paid off his loan, Dad even closed on Saturday afternoon; and once our boys were in college, he even closed all day on Saturday so he could come up and watch them play soccer or football.

Dad worked at his business until the age of 70 when a muscle disease curtailed his ability to lift heavy seats and tarps. The Lord was very good to us, and Dad always gave God the praise for whatever he accomplished in business. (recollections by Jan Dean)
