Saturday: Jan Hey attends Merkel spring luncheon  |
 Sunday: Jan Hey picnics at Lake Sweetwater "20 couples" [one of which was Jan Hey and Elbert Dean] "I was Sandra's college roommate. Dad and I dated every night of that eight-day vacation except one when Dad had to work at the lumber yard. We kept up correspondence by U.S. mail and Dad came to see me in Denver that September and met my parents and sister. I returned to Merkel for Thanksgiving and again stayed with the Sadlers while meeting Dad's sisters." (Mom's Recollections) |

March 25, 1950. Met Janna Ruth Hey (approx. 5 pm), 106 Oak Street (where I rented a room from Mrs. Ash), Merkel, Texas, on Spring Break from CWC (Colorado Women's College). She came with Sandra Sadler and Sue Mayfield. Activity: Cookout at Sadler's cabin on Sweetwater Lake (Saturday Evening & Sunday afternoon). Church together, evening First Baptist, Merkel. Cookout at "Banker" Booth Warren ranch, east of Merkel. Large cookout shelter by large stock tank with boats. Showed Jan my class ring. The Lake "ate" it: still in the bottom!" (Mom's added Memories) Other activities in that Spring Break in Merkel (March 25--April 2, 1950). Dinner and a movie in San Angelo. Dinner at the Abilene Country Club. Dad had never danced, and I had never liked to dance so we just watched the others while we enjoyed talking with each other. April 2, 1950. Took girls back to Amarillo to take train to Denver, Colorado: Janna Ruth Hey (Sterling, Illinois), Donalynn Rees (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Alice Johnson (Fremont, Nebraska), Sandra Sadler (Merkel, Texas), Sue Mayfield (Merkel, Texas). |
 106 Oak Street, Merkel, Texas, (Where Dad rented a room from Mrs. Ash) Dad was waiting on the front porch when we arrived on March 25, 1950. It was an introduction to many wonderful years of blessing from the Lord. |
