Grandma and Grandpa took trips each of their last 2 years together. In 1966, they went to the east coast and Canada. Grandma sent back many postcards, including one of Greenock Presbyterian Church, St. Andrews, New Brunswick. On the back, Grandma wrote, "Hi Steve. We've seen any number of Baptist Churches since we came into Maine. However, they are all small except the one in Bar Harbor. We drove around Bar Harbor and took pictures of the ocean. One can't see where the fire [Great Fire of October, 1947] was a few years ago. It's all grown over. Love, Gram" In August of 1967, Grandma and Grandpa Hey went up the east side of Lake Michigan, through the upper peninsula, sent the Mackinac Bridge postcard, and back down through Wisconsin. While they were stopped at the Janesville Oasis (just off I-90), Uncle Phil Hey and his family came into the popular restaurant for travelers. Uncle Phil was driving north to accept the position of head basketball coach at UW-LaCrosse. Totally unplanned meeting. What a blessing. It would be the last time Uncle Phil saw his father; Grandpa Hey passed away on October 9. |
